Motorsport Australia Licence Testing

Licence testing for circuit, rally, and speed based motorsport events

Queensland Driver Training - Motorsport Australia Licence Testing

Motorsport Australia Licence Testing Overview

Motorsport Australia Licence Testing is the first step if you want to compete in organised motorsport, including circuit racing, rally, off-road, or speed events. These observed licence tests allow you to demonstrate your driving ability, safety awareness, and attitude in a controlled environment.

Licence testing can be completed at selected track and training events, or by prior arrangement. During the assessment, you are observed on track and, where possible, in a car. You will also complete a motorsport theory session covering safety procedures, flag rules, and competition standards.

To pass the test, you must show that you can lap the circuit safely and consistently at a competitive pace. You’ll need a reliable manual vehicle that is suitable for track use. Successful applicants receive a certificate that is submitted to Motorsport Australia as proof of completion.

Motorsport Australia licences are structured across multiple levels. Level 1 is used for introductory and non-competitive activities. Level 2 covers both non-speed and speed-based events such as motorkhanas, drifting, regularity trials, and timed competition events. National licences allow competition in discipline-specific events such as circuit racing, rallying, off-road racing, or superkart racing. International licences are required for FIA-sanctioned events and carry additional requirements.

All applicants must complete a health declaration each year. Medical examinations are required depending on age and medical history, with more frequent reviews applying to drivers over 45. You must be at least 16 years of age to undertake licence testing, as no junior licence is available.

  • Medical

    • Complete Health Statement on application form each year.
    • Medical Examination by CAMS-designated Medical Examiner.
    • One-off medical examination for those under the age of 45.
    • Ongoing examination every:
      • 24 months for licence holders over 45 years of age
      • 12 months if instructed by the medical examiner.
  • Assesment

    • Complete a motor sport lecture
    • Undergo an Observed Licence Test (OLT) at which style, ability and attitudes are evaluated.
  • Age Restrictions

    • You must be 16 years of age.
    • There is no junior licence testing available.
  • Level 1

Licence used for club recruitment promotions, or a specific non-competitive part of a competitive event.

  • Level 2

Broken up into two parts, Level 2NS (NS for Non-Speed events), and Level 2S (S for Speed events).

A level 2NS licence entitles the competitor to compete in events such as observed section trials, touring assemblies, non-timed road events, motorkhanas, khanacross and drifting events, up to International level.

A level 2S licence entitles the holder to compete in 2NS events plus regularity trials up to National Championship level, single and multi-car speed events (not racing) up to International level, and touring road events that do not run over closed road sections.

  • National Level

Entitles the licence holder to compete in rallies, circuit events, off-road or superkart events, depending on the type of licence issued.

The national licence has individual requirements specific to each discipline’s licence. Holding a licence at the national level in one discipline does not entitle you to compete in another discipline.

  • International Level

The FIA licence is required to compete in International events. Again, discipline-specific, the licences have additional requirements to national licences.

The first step toward circuit racing or rallying is a PC Licence (Provisional Competition), and the following prerequisites apply.
