Motorsport Australia Licence Testing is the first step if you want to compete in organised motorsport, including circuit racing, rally, off-road, or speed events. These observed licence tests allow you to demonstrate your driving ability, safety awareness, and attitude in a controlled environment.
Licence testing can be completed at selected track and training events, or by prior arrangement. During the assessment, you are observed on track and, where possible, in a car. You will also complete a motorsport theory session covering safety procedures, flag rules, and competition standards.
To pass the test, you must show that you can lap the circuit safely and consistently at a competitive pace. You’ll need a reliable manual vehicle that is suitable for track use. Successful applicants receive a certificate that is submitted to Motorsport Australia as proof of completion.
Motorsport Australia licences are structured across multiple levels. Level 1 is used for introductory and non-competitive activities. Level 2 covers both non-speed and speed-based events such as motorkhanas, drifting, regularity trials, and timed competition events. National licences allow competition in discipline-specific events such as circuit racing, rallying, off-road racing, or superkart racing. International licences are required for FIA-sanctioned events and carry additional requirements.
All applicants must complete a health declaration each year. Medical examinations are required depending on age and medical history, with more frequent reviews applying to drivers over 45. You must be at least 16 years of age to undertake licence testing, as no junior licence is available.
